The Story of Noah's Ark (Arch Books)

Image
The Story of Noah's Ark Arch Books Written by Jane Latourette Illustrated by Sally Mathews Copyright: 1965 Format: Paperback Status: Not currently in print, but many pre-owned copies are available on Ebay Conclusion: keep it, fix it if you want Today I get to review yet another of the many different Arch books in our collection.  As I mentioned in previous reviews, Arch books are a bit of a gamble. There are a lot of really good ones, but there are also some that make pretty bad mistakes.  We've had this one in our collection for many years, but have only read it a few times.  What do I remember of it?  About the only thing I can recall is that there is one set of pages I really hate because it is so difficult to read the words over the top of the image.  But as for the actual content of the book, I don't remember anything about it.  Let's see how it stacks up the real Bible. The Good Points: This Arch book stays very close to the Bible. The book is written...

Noah's Ark (Usborne Bible Tales)

Image
Noah's Ark Usborne Bible Tales Retold by Heather Amery Designed by Maria Wheatley Illustrated by Norman Young Copyright: 1996 Format: Paperback Status: Not currently in print, but many preowned copies are available from ebay One of the great things about this book is that it can be read at two different levels. You can read only the words at the top of the page and have super-short condensed version of the story for very young kids, or you can read the entire page and have a more detailed story for slightly older children.  This particular book is one I picked up at from my library's discarded book sale.  At the time, my daughter was already a bit old for it, so we never read it much.  My son has never been very interested in the Noah story, and since we have so many, this one almost never gets read to him either.  How does the book measure up to the Bible? The Good Points: This book stays fairly close to the Bible. The illustrations are colorful and interestin...

Noah's Ark (The Bible for Little People)

Image
Noah's Ark The Bible for Little People Text by Christine Deverell Illustrated by Richard Deverell, James Deverell, and Chris King Copyright: 2002 Format: Boardbook Status: A few preowned copies are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep (But consider replacing with a better one) It seems like we've had this book forever. It was certainly one of the very first Bible books that I ever bought for my daughter.  We've read it frequently, mostly because it is so short that we can fit it in even when we're running late and need to get the kids into bed ASAP.  But how does it hold up compared to the actual Bible? The Good Points: The book opens up/down instead of left/ like a regular book, so it's kind of fun for kids. It's very short, so it can be read quickly when you are short on time. The illustrations are cute and colorful. The book is sturdy and well-built. The Discrepancies: The board book doesn't mention why God is flooding the Earth, nor does it mention any pe...

Noah and the Ark

Image
Noah and the Ark Written By Kim Mitzo Thompson, Karen Mitzo Hilderbrand, Ken Carder Illustrated by Ron Kauffman Copyright: 2015 Format: Paperback Status: A different version is available for purchase at Amazon and Ebay Conclusion: Keep I purchased this book at the dollar store quite a few years ago. It even came with a CD.  My daughter has listened to it, though I admit that I have not. Of the book itself I don't seem to have a strong opinion in any way. It's the type of book that doesn't seem to stand out much.  Today I guess we'll find out if it is at least accurate if not particularly memorable. The Good Points: This book stays close to the Bible. In fact, some of the sections appear to be word for word from the NIV translation. This book doesn't shy away with how wicked the people of the Earth had become. God tells Noah that he will "put an end to all people and destroy the earth." It gives a lot of detail on the ark itself: it's specific measurem...

The Story of Noah (Alice in Bibleland)

Image
The Story of Noah An Alice in Bibleland Storybook Written by Alice Joyce Davidson Illustrated by Victoria Marshall Copyright: 1984 Format: Hardback Status: Not currently in print, but many preowned versions are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep (fix it if you want) I was looking through my son's collection of Bible storybooks recently, and decided it was time to thin it down by removing some of the ones he is starting to outgrow.  A few of those I've already reviewed, but there are still quite a few I need to cover before we send them on their way.  It seemed like it might be the right time to delve into our numerous Noah's Ark books so we can get rid of some of them. There are so many out there! I've tried very hard to keep our collection limited. We only have six amazingly. Today I will begin with the one I like best.  Alice in Bibleland is (almost) always a good choice. The Good Points: The book follows the Bible pretty well. It is written in rhyme and is fun to...

The Lord Is My Shepherd: The Twenty-Third Psalm

Image
The Lord Is My Shepherd The Twenty-Third Psalm Illustrated by Tasha Tudor Copyright: 1980 Format: Paperback Status: Some pre-owned copies are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep We've had this Bible story in our collection for quite a while, but it isn't one we've read very often.  In fact, none of the Psalm 23 stories have ever been favorites of either of my children.  Perhaps it is because it doesn't have a concrete storyline like most of the Bible stories we read to them. The Good Points: The words are straight from the King James version of the Bible. (Though this might be difficult for children to understand) The illustrations are beautiful, though perhaps more pleasing to adults than children. The Discrepancies: There are no discrepancies. The text is straight out of the Bible. Well, this was a short review!  It's hard to say much when the text is word for word from the Holy Book.  Is this worth having in your library?  Yes. I really love the illustra...

The Twenty-Third Psalm (Alice in Bibleland)

Image
The Twenty-Third Psalm An Alice in Bibleland Storybook Written by Alice Joyce Davidson Illustrated by Victoria Marshall Copyright: 1988 Format: Hardback Status: Not currently in print, but many pre-owned version are available at ebay Conclusion: keep Today we have yet another Alice in Bibleland book.  While I do love the Alice in Bibleland series, this one is not my favorite book.  The premise of most books in this series is that Alice reads a magic book and goes back in time to witness (but not participate in) events that happened in the Bible. This book is different, though. In this book, Alice reads Psalm 23, then write short poems to help explain what the verses mean. My husband likes the book, and the poems are quite accurate, but I feel like it takes too many steps away from the Bible to really be considered a Bible story. It's more like a commentary.  I have no problems with the book itself, but I question whether it should be considered a Bible story, or no...
