The Story of Creation (Arch Books)

Image
The Story of Creation Arch Books Written by Beth Atchison Illustrated by Ed Koehler Copyright: 1996 Format: paperback Status: Available from the publisher Conclusion: Keep Wow, I'm reviewing a book that is still available for purchase. Considering that most of my books have come from thrift stores, that's pretty rare for me!  To be honest, I'm not very familiar with this book. We had two other Creation stories (only one now, since the other one didn't make the cut ) and my kids regularly pick those instead of this one.  I know the Arch books range in quality from excellent to poor, so I honestly don't know where this book will fall. The Good Points: This arch book stays very true to the Bible The pictures are colorful and eye catching The book is written in rhyme to make it fun to read and easy to memorize. The story ends by trying to tie this story to Jesus. The final page in the book is a note to parents suggesting ways they can explore God's creation with ...

The Story of Creation (Alice in Bibleland)

Image
The Story of Creation Alice in Bibleland Written by Alice Joyce Davidson Illustrated by Victoria Marshall Copyright: 1984 Format: Hardback Status: Not currently in print, but some pre-owned copies are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep I'm reviewing another Creation story today and I sure hope it holds up better than the one I reviewed in my last blogpost.  Since this is an Alice in Bibleland Story, I have high hopes for it. Those stories are usually pretty solid and stay close to the Bible. The Good P oints: This Alice in Bibleland book, like all of the books in this series, is written in rhyme and fun to read. It stay very close to Genesis 1 in the Bible. The pictures are very pretty and it is fun to find Alice and the airmail bird on nearly every page. When this book describes God creating the plants and animals, it lists some specific examples to make it more concrete and relatable for children. The Discrepancies: As with all Alice in Bibleland stories, it shows Alice, a...

God's World (Wee Sing Bible Songs and Stories)

Image
God's World Wee Sing Bible Songs and Stories Written by Carolyn Larsen Illustrated by Carole Boerke Copyright: 1998 Format: Board book Status: Not currently in print. I cannot even find pre-owned copies on ebay. Conclusion: Get Rid of It   This was one of our very first Bible stories. I picked it up off of a little free library back when my daughter was still a very young infant.  At that point in time she hated books and cried and any time we sat down to read them.  There were only two books she liked (Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me by Eric Carl and a Winnie the Pooh crinkle book), but there were three other books she would tolerate.  This book was one of those three, so we read it over and over and over again. At that point in time, I was so grateful to have another book she would tolerate, that I didn't care about the quality. It was a Bible story too! How could it be bad? Then, because it was part of our collection for so long, we just kept it and I never reall...

Sampson and Delilah (Great Bible Stories)

Image
Samson and Delilah Great Bible Stories Adapted by Maxine Nodel Illustrated by Norman Nodel Copyright: 1993  Format: Hardback Status: Get Rid of It Conclusion: Not currently in print, a few pre-owned copies might be available on ebay There are twelve stories in the Great Bible Stories set.  I believe they were all originally sold at the Family Dollar, since all of our copies have those price tags printed on the covers (they aren't even stickers, but are actually part of the cover art).  I love the fact that various Dollar stores sell children's Bible stories. It's a great way to get them into people's homes at a cheap price.  Many of our Bible stories originally came from there as well. The Good Points: The picture are very pretty with great colors and realistic details.  The illustration add details that the words don't mention. One example is when Samson burns down the Philistine fields. The story never mentions that he uses foxes, though the illustrations clea...

The Man Who Won Without Fighting (Arch Books)

Image
The Man Who Won Without Fighting Arch Books Written by Yvonne Holloway McCall Illustrated by Vaccaro Associates Copyright: 1971 Format: Paperback Status: Not currently in print, but some pre-owned copies are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep it It's difficult to tell from the title of this book, but this is the story of Gideon. He's not very well known, and certainly doesn't get a lot of children's books written about him, but I'm glad I found this one.  Arch Books are good if you want a stories about the lesser known people from the Bible. However, I always feel that I need to add a disclaimer before any Arch Book I review.  Read through it carefully.  About half of the Arch Books are great and accurately portray the Bible.  The others, though, aren't nearly as well done and don't stick around my family's personal Bible story library beyond the first reading.  How does this particular book measure up? The Good Points: This Arch book does stay very tr...
