Conclusion: Keep
I'm reviewing another Creation story today and I sure hope it holds up better than the one I reviewed in my last blogpost. Since this is an Alice in Bibleland Story, I have high hopes for it. Those stories are usually pretty solid and stay close to the Bible.
The Good Points:
- This Alice in Bibleland book, like all of the books in this series, is written in rhyme and fun to read.
- It stay very close to Genesis 1 in the Bible.
- The pictures are very pretty and it is fun to find Alice and the airmail bird on nearly every page.
- When this book describes God creating the plants and animals, it lists some specific examples to make it more concrete and relatable for children.
The Discrepancies:
- As with all Alice in Bibleland stories, it shows Alice, a girl from our time, going back to witness events from the Bible.
- On the second day the Bibleland book only mentions that God created clouds. In the Bible, God made the sky and separated the waters of the Earth from the waters of the sky.
- This book does not go into any details about how Adam was made. It also skips the process of Adam naming the animals and seeking a companion, or God creating Eve for him, though it does say that God made Eve to be Adam's wife.
Most Alice in Bibleland stories conclude with Alice describing the lessons she learned. Instead, this book ends with Alice singing a song of praise to God for his creation of the world. I'm happy to see that the Alice in Bibleland series continues to maintain its high standards in retelling stories from the Bible. This one is definitely a keeper. I recommend it for ages 3-8.
