Daniel in the Lions' Den (Arch Books)

Image
Daniel in the Lions' Den Arch Book Written by Jane R. Latourette Illustrated by Sally Mathews Copyright 1966 Format: paperback Status: Not currently in print, but pre-owned copies are available on ebay and the publisher has release a modern version here (though I don't know how much is the same or if it entirely different). Conclusion: Keep Here we have yet another Arch book.  I grab these anytime I find them, so now we have dozens of them in our collection.  Some are incredibly well done, and some are rather inaccurate, so you need to be careful with them.  However, what I love about these Arch book is that there are so many of them, and they cover everything! Do you want a story about some obscure part of the Bible?  Arch probably has a book for it.  Now, Daniel in the Lions' Den, however, is certainly not an obscure Bible story. I've seen many versions out there, and we have 3 in our personal collection.  Is Arch's version were keeping around ev...

The Story of Daniel And the Lions (Alice in Bibleland)

Image
The Story of Daniel and the Lions An Alice in Bibleland Storybook Written by Alice Joyce Davidson Illustrated by Victoria Marshall Copyright: 1986 Format: Hardcover Status: Not currently in print, but many pre-owned copies are available on ebay Conclusion: keep In my last review, I covered one of my son's favorite Bible stories from when he was very young.  Today I am covering his current favorite story.  It is another of the Alice in Bibleland stories where Alice uses her magic book to go back and watch (but not participate in) events from the Bible. I happen to like the Alice in Bibleland books a lot.  Overall they have done a wonderful job sticking close to the Bible, yet creating fun stories for kids. However, I know of at least one Alice story that didn't make the cut for our personal library (it was the Christmas story, which I have not reviewed yet).  Let's see if the Daniel story is up to the series' usual standards. The Good Points: This storybook stay...

Joshua and the Wall

Image
Joshua and the Wall No author listed No illustrator listed Copyright 2019 by The Clever Factory, Inc Format: Board Book Status: So few details are listed about this book that it is difficult to track down, however I think   these   may be the same set of books with different illustrations.  They are also available on   ebay   Conclusion: keep For a book that I purchased brand new, this book is in poor shape now.  It has nothing to do with its quality and is due entirely to the fact that my son loved it.  When he was about 1 or 2, this was his favorite Bible story so we read it over and over and over again.  That was an age where he still drooled a lot and tended to have his fingers in his mouth, so our copy of this book is full of pages that were stuck together repeatedly, then pulled apart to make little white ripped marks.  It's a book that was well loved, that's for sure, and it shows.   So how does the content of this book hold ...

Joshua (Bible Heroes)

Image
Joshua Bible Heroes by Jason Parish Copyright: 2014 Format: paperback Status: A few pre-owned copies are available on ebay   Conclusion: keep I found this book at one of the local dollar stores.  In fact, I have two Joshua books and both came from the dollar store.  I've had this book for years, but it has never been a favorite for either of my two children.  I suspect it is because there are lots of words on only a few pages, which means fewer pictures. The Good Points: The book stays pretty close to the Bible. Joshua is illustrated with dark colored skin, which is a bit startling in a world of Bible stories where most of the people look like Europeans.  But is this accurate? Would Joshua have had light or dark skin?  Moses was mistaken for an Egyptian (Exodus 2:19), so it can be assumed that the other Ancient Israelites, like Joshua, probably looked similar to the ancient Egyptians. So what did the Ancient Egyptians look like? Did they have dark or light ...

God's Witness: The Courage of Stephen

Image
God's Witness: The Courage of Stephen Written by The Voice of the Martyrs with Cheryl Odden Illustrated by G.R. Erlan Copyright: 2009 Format: Hardcover Status: many pre-owned copies available on ebay . I believe it is part of this set of books that can be purchased directly from Voice of the Martyrs.  Conclusion: Keep I originally found this book at a thrift store and bought it because it was a story we did not have in our collection yet.  However, we haven't gotten much use out of it because once I read it, I decided it was not appropriate for my daughter's age.  Being the story of Stephen, and written by The Voice of the Martyrs, they don't sugar-coat this story in the slightest. I believe I did finally read it to her this year, when she was 6.  It's a good book, but it's not emotionally easy to read. The Good Points: The book follows the Bible very closely. The illustrations are beautiful! The story is written with two styles of text, so you can read a conde...
