To Everything There Is a Season

Image
To Everything There Is a Season Illustrations by Leo and Diane Dillon Copyright 1998 Format: Hardcover Status: Available on Amazon  and ebay Conclusion:  Buy it! It's absolutely worth it! I picked up this book from our local library's discarded book sale. It is in practically perfect condition, so I can only assume it was being discarded because people just weren't checking it out. What a shame!  This is such a wonderful book! If I had to pick my favorite Bible storybook in our collection, it would probably be this one.  It is such an amazing book on so many levels! The Good Points: The words are taken straight from the Bible. It's the King James translation of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 and concludes with the New King James translation of Ecclesiastes 1:4. The artwork is gorgeous! Each page uses a different style of art from a different world culture to illustrate the verse.  The end of the book tells you where the art is from and gives you some details about tha...

Adam and His Family (Arch Books)

Image
Adam and His Family Arch Books  Written by Robert Baden Illustrated by Arthur W. Kirchhoff Copyright 1986 Format: paperback Status: Not currently in print. A few pre-owned copies are available on ebay  and other more recent arch books are available from Concordia Publishing Conclusion: Keep it (buy it if you can find it)   My son recently asked to read a story that we had never read before, so we picked this one.  It's another Arch book, and is a bit different from typical Bible storybooks in that it doesn't specifically focus on one story, but instead tries to give an idea of everything that happens from the Creation of Man to The Great Flood. It is called Adam and His Family because it is the story of Adam's descendants and it focuses mostly on the people. The Good Points: This story is very accurate. In the story where Cain kills Abel, the author and illustrator did a good job of making the story appropriate for younger children. It mentions that Cain killed Abel,...

Two Cities That Burned (Arch Books)

Image
Two Cities That Burned Arch Books Written by Lucille B. Golphenee Illustrated by Gordon Willman Copyright: 1983 Format: paperback Status: Some preowned versions available on ebay Conclusion: Keep If there was ever a difficult Bible story to turn into a children's story, it is the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Arch has certainly attempted it, though, and it is as child appropriate as a story involving so much sin can be.  For some strange reason it's one of my son's favorite Bible storybooks so I hope it makes the cut today. After reading the first couple of pages though, I'm not sure. The Good Points: The book is written in rhyme, so it is fun and easy to remember. The illustrations are used to tell more of the story than is written in the book.  My son loves to look at the initial picture showing the people of Sodom and Gomorrah and try to identify all the different sins he sees. The book makes the less savory parts of the story more child friendly. The Discrepancies: T...

The Story of Moses

Image
The Story of Moses No author listed No illustrator listed Copyright 2019 by The Clever Factory, Inc Format: Board Book Status: So few details are listed about this book that it is difficult to track down, however I think these may be the same set of books with different illustrations.  They are also available on ebay Conclusion: Keep I've spent a lot of time immersed in Exodus reviewing all of these Moses books, which has been really interesting. I certainly have a much more in depth understanding of Moses's life than I ever have before.  Today I get to finish my (current) collection of Moses books by reviewing the simplest one I own.  It tells the entirety of Moses's life from his birth to the Ten Commandments, and does it all in a grand total of 14 sentences.  I left this book until the end because I'm not quite sure how to review a book that cover so much material in such a small space, but I'll give it a shot. The Good Points: This book skips a lot, but wh...

Moses in the Wilderness (People of the Bible)

Image
Moses in the Wilderness People of the Bible Retold by Catherine Storr Pictures by Jim Russell Copyright: 1992 Format: Hardcover Status: Not currently in print, but many preowned copies are available on ebay   I'm really excited to review this story today.  I am not very familiar with this particular book because I found it after my daughter had stopped wanting me to read Bible stories to her (when she wanted the real Bible instead), and it is still more complicated than my son will sit still for as a bed time story.  However, I recently reviewed Moses of the Bulrushes , also by Catherine Storr, and was very impressed. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she kept the same strict standards for this book as she did for the other one. For this set of books, Catherine Storr split Moses's story into four separate books. The first one describes Moses's childhood, his time as a shepherd in Midian, and the Burning Bush.  The second book, which I do not have, is called Moses ...

Moses of the Bulrushes (People of the Bible)

Image
Moses of the Bulrushes People of the Bible Retold by Catherine Storr Pictures by Jim Russell  Copyright 1992 Format: Hardcover Status: Not currently in print but some preowned books are available on ebay Conclusion: Keep It!  If you don't already have it, find a copy. This one is worth having!      More Moses!  I have so many books about Moses in my collection.  This series of books is fairly large. I'm aware of at least 23 different books and there may be others.  What I particularly like about this series that it doesn't try to cram Moses's entire life into one book. Instead it spreads his life out over four books, so that the author can include many rich details, yet still keep the length short enough for a bedtime story.  This series does with same with other Bible characters too. Joseph's life into 3 books, and Jesus's life into 5, plus 2 more dedicated to some of his parables.  I really like this approach for sets of children's boo...
